Quick Facts for Graduate Program Applicants
- How to apply: Electronic application must be made through the University of Delaware's Office of Graduate & Professional Education.
- Complete applications received by January 15th will have the best opportunity for admission with full financial aid for the fall semester. If space remains, we will continue to review complete applications received prior to April 15th.
U.S. citizens and permanent residents may apply for spring admission (deadline October 1) however, it is best to contact us prior to application to be sure that we are admitting students for spring that year. Foreign nationals cannot be considered for spring admission due to university language training requirements.
- We typically enroll 15-20 new graduate students each year.
- As of fall 2009, there are 85 students enrolled in our graduate program, all of which receive full financial support.
- We have no minimum GRE score for admission although most admitted students have GREs over 1100 combined.
- Foreign nationals who do not have a degree from a US university must take the TOEFL exam. The minimum scores are 600 for the paper based exam, 250 computer based, or 100 on the IBT. Applicants whose scores are below these minima will be rejected without review by the administration.
- Over 95% of admitted applicants have prior, substantive research experience. This must be well documented in the application.
- Graduate students typically are not admitted directly into research mentor laboratories. MS students usually chose their research mentor during the first two weeks of their first semester in the program. Ph.D. students perform 2-3 laboratory rotations during the first year in the program and chose their mentor from these rotation experiences.
- 100% of our graduate students receive full financial assistance in the form of teaching assistantships, research assistantships, fellowships, and outside awards.
- The value of the typical financial aid package is $43,240 per year including a full tuition scholarship for the academic year and a stipend in the amount of $21,000 for the 12-month calendar year.
- The University of Delaware provides funded graduate students discounted group rates for health and dental insurance. Note: health insurance is mandatory for international students. Spouses or families can be included for competitive fees.
- The median time to degree for a typical masters student is 2 years.
- The median time to degree for a typical doctoral student is 5 years.
